Night markers are very popular in Taiwan and in the East in general. In fact, a visit to this part of the world is not complete without a visit to a night market. Simply put, these are markets that run during the night, but they are a little different to the markets that you visit during the day.

A night market is often open-air, with the skies lit by the shops below, the air thick with incense, the smell of freshly cooked food and the chatter of shoppers. These are not really for shopping, but for taking a casual stroll and absorbing the sights, sounds and tastes of the city. There is often a lot of fresh and local food to sample, food that can be eaten on the go. All visitors are advised to sample at least some of this fare.

In this article we’ll look at the best hotels that are located next to the best night markets, which means that after a night-time stroll you are always just a short walk away from returning to your nice warm hotel room.

Les Suites Grandee

The Les Suites Grandee is a four-star hotel that is located opposite the world famous Shilin Night Market, which finds its way onto the itineraries of many tourists and attracts visitors from all over. The Shilin Night Market is also one of the oldest night markets in Taiwan and further afield, having been founded way back in 1899. Many visitors flock to the Shilin Night Market for its food, of which there is a wide variety to choose from. From handheld snacks that you can take around the market with you, to drinks that will warm you up during the chilly night, it really does have it all and the air is awash with the scent of it throughout the night.

The Shilin Night Market opens in the late afternoon and remains open for some time. As well as eating and drinking, there is also a lot of shopping to be done, with many great bargains available. Don’t feel bad if you don’t buy anything though, the majority of tourists come here to browse — to window shop if you like — and the stall owners accept and understand this. It’s an experience, not necessarily an opportunity to spend, but if you do pick up a few items then you’ll have some unique mementoes to take back home with you.

All of the rooms come with a mini bar, a television and a DVD player, and guests will also receive free bottles of water when they arrive.

All guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast, served in the onsite restaurant every morning. There is a wide choice on offer here, including some local delicacies and something with more of an International flavor for those guests seeking a taste of home. If you want to enjoy your morning tea or coffee outside in the sunshine, then you can do so in the alfresco dining area, where freshly brewed coffee is served to guests at the Les Suites Grandee everyday.

Ideally located, the Les Suites Grandee is not only a short walk from the world famous market, but other top attractions are also a short walk or a short drive away. These include the Taipei Art Museum and the Yangmingshan National Park. Les Suites Grandee is also easily accessed via both of the airports in Taipei, being just a 30 minute and 40 minute drive from Songshan Airport and Taoyuan International Airport respectively.

Sunworld Dynasty Hotel Taipei

If the Shilin Night Market is the biggest and most famous night market in the country, then the Raohe Street Night Market, which is in the Songshan District, is the second biggest and second most famous. It doesn’t offer quite as much as the Shilin Night Market, but all of the mainstays are there and this is a great attraction in itself.

The Sunworld Dynasty Hotel Taipei is the place to be if you’re planning a visit to this night market. This is a four-star hotel that offers a lot for leisure travelers and business travelers, with spacious rooms, business rooms, banqueting rooms and much more.

Taipei is a beautiful city, one that has attracted sightseers across the East for many decades, and one that has only just started to appeal to tourists from further afield. The best way to enjoy a city is to stay within the centre, putting you within walking distance of the best landmarks, the best attractions and the best bars and restaurants, and Taipei is no different.

A stay in any city center means you will be some distance from the airport, but you’ll only be making that trip twice, to begin and to end your holiday. In Taipei’s city center, you’ll only be a short drive away from the airport anyway, and many hotels have shuttle services that are available for a fraction of the price that you would pay for a taxi.

The hotels below are the most luxurious and most iconic hotels in downtown Taipei. These are the places to be, the perfect base for any trip to this vibrant city.

Hotel Royal Taipei

This hotel is simply faultless and we’re clearly not the only ones who think so, judging by its 5-star rating. The Hotel Royal Taipei is the epitome of luxury in downtown Taipei, showing that you don’t have to compromise on quality and comfort for a great location. From their Premier Double Rooms to their Corner Suites, all of the rooms at the Hotel Royal Taipei have been designed with a painstaking attention to detail, equipped with everything from air conditioning, a flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi, to a bathtub and a minibar.

The hotel is big, with over 200 rooms available. It has five restaurants, allowing guests to choose which cuisine they fancy on any given day, with everything from Japanese to Cantonese and a bakery. There are plenty of staff, all of which have been well trained, so despite its size, guests never feel overlooked and are always guaranteed VIP treatment.

If you want to do a bit of shopping then the hotel can help out there as well. As well as a gift shop, where you can pick up a memento of your trip, they also have an in-house tailor who can fit you for a special suit. This is a hotel that has really thought of everything, which is why it is our favorite hotel in downtown Taipei, and maybe our favorite hotel in the entire city.

Regent Taipei

The Regent Taipei is a 5-star hotel in the heart of Taipei. This is even bigger than the Hotel Royal mentioned above, with a huge 538 rooms available. This is one of, if not the biggest hotels in the city and as well as their many rooms they also have a business center, a fitness center, a health club, a rooftop pool and a sauna.

The rooms are the highlight of this hotel, showing everyone how 5-star luxury should be. Their suites in particular are some of the best rooms in the entire city, with marble-paved bathrooms that boast spa bathtubs, and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer some breathtaking views of the city. These are the most expensive rooms that they have available and they are also the biggest, but if you want something smaller and cheaper then they have many more room types available.

They also have plenty of options when it comes to afternoon or evening dining, which you can enjoy after beginning your day with a buffet breakfast. The dining options include traditional Japanese food, traditional Chinese food and much more, along with a brasserie that serves a little more variety and has a salad bar.

Ambience Hotel

The Ambience Hotel prides itself on offering all of the amenities you could ask for in a hotel, all delivered in a simple, minimalistic environment that allows the Ambience Hotel to live up to its name. Many of the rooms here are on the small side, but the hotel itself is very spacious and if room size is an issue for you then there are also bigger ones available.

The Ambience Hotel has free Wi-Fi throughout and all of the rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a minibar, a hairdryer, toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities and a flat-screen television. There is a restaurant onsite that serves some local cuisine, and there are also shops and vending machines so you can purchase some snacks, some drinks and some other items.

The Ambience Hotel also has free parking if you have rented a car in the city, which is not too common as far as downtown Taipei hotels are concerned. This is a very affordable 4-star hotel, with rooms that should be able to match most budgets and with great views of this beautiful city in all of them.

Tango Nanshi Taipei

The Tango Nanshi is part of the Tango hospitality brand, which has several other hotels across Taiwan and further afield. This downtown Taipei hotel has been rated as 4-stars, with spacious rooms that all offer views of Taipei and have a number of amenities. All rooms come with their own en-suite bathroom, equipped with a spa bathtub. The rooms are also fitted with a flat-screen televisions, a fridge and a safe.

As far as the choice of rooms go, at the Tango Nanshi you can opt for a Superior Studio, which does not have a window and therefore offers no city views; a Junior King Room, which does have a window and a view, and is a little bigger; or a Premium King Room, which has everything that the other rooms have and a few extra features as well. These rooms are all reasonably priced, and when it comes to sizable 4-star rooms in the city center, you’ll struggle to find cheaper.

The Tango Nanshi hotel has a business center, a fitness center and a restaurant, making it an ideal choice for business travelers who have work in the city, and for leisure travelers who need a comfortable base for their Taipei getaway. The Tango Nanshi has an airport shuttle service that will take you to and from the airport, but there is a surcharge for this service and you should try to book it well in advance. They also have a laundry and a dry cleaning service inside the hotel, along with baggage storage, a banqueting facility and a concierge.

The most stressful part of any holiday is the flight. Nobody likes to go through the waiting and the checks at the airport, few people enjoy cramped air travel and after all that, when you eventually land, getting to your hotel from the airport is an exhausting finale. Airports are typically located on the outskirts of major cities, if not outside of them, and the majority of hotels are in city centers, so that means that you often need to pay a hefty taxi fee to get to where you need to go.

In this article we’ll look at hotels that are right next to the airport, which means that there is no extensive and expensive travel involved, and in many cases the airport will even provide a free shuttle service to bring you and your bags to the hotel, before taking you back to the airport on the final day of your holiday.

Novotel Taipei

The Novotel Taipei is a business hotel. This 4-star rated hotel is the closest highly rated hotel to the Taoyuan International Airport, which makes it a popular choice with those heading into Taipei to do business, and also those leisure travelers who don’t want to travel far from the airport to get to their hotel. The Novotel Taipei tries to make every facet of your holiday easier, from the free airport shuttle service that makes the first and final days of your holiday much easier, to the 24-hour assistance provided by the attentive and knowledgeable staff at the front desk.

Novotel understand the business traveller more than any other hotel brand. They understand that they want some degree of luxury and that comfort is as important to them as it is to the leisure traveller. They also understand that business travelers work hard and play hard, which is why, alongside the business center and the banqueting facilities, you will also find a bar and a restaurant, perfect to unwind on an evening with a good drink and a good meal. There is also a fitness center and spa facilities, so that all of the guests at the Novotel Taipei can unwind after a hard day’s work or a day spent sightseeing.

Another area in which the Novotel Taipei excels, and one in which they provide something that very few other hotels in Taipei provide, is their check-in and check-out times. The standard in Taipei, and in other major cities as well, is for a check-in time of around 3:00pm and a check-out time of around 12:00. There are some that try and change this to accommodate the needs of their guests, but in doing so they usually only offer check-in an hour earlier or check-out an hour later. As far as the Novotel Taipei are concerned, if you book a room with them on a certain date, then you should be allowed to check-in anytime during that day. This means that regardless of the arrival of your flight, you can check-in as soon as you arrive at the hotel, before slipping away to your room to offload those heavy bags and to put your feet up. Check-outs are early, but if you fancy a lie-in then you can request one at the front desk and providing that they are not fully booked, they will accommodate you as best they can. It is this service, this desire to do whatever their guests ask and to cater for they every whim, that truly sets the Novotel brand, and the Novotel Taipei in particular, apart from the rest.

Hotel Orchard Park

The Hotel Orchard Park is geared more towards leisure travelers than business ones, but this is a hotel that everyone can enjoy, serving as a stylish and comfortable base for a visit to Taipei. Business travelers can make use of the executive floor and a number of other amenities, whilst those seeking VIP treatment can make use of the beauty center and the swimming pool, pampering themselves throughout their stay. There is also a fitness center so that guests needn’t neglect their workouts, and a peaceful garden to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Check-in at the Hotel Orchard Park begins at 12:00pm, several hours before the standard check-in time. This may change if the hotel is full, due to the fact that check-out time is also 12:00 and they need time to clean the room between guests, but they may be able to accommodate early arrivals. The Hotel Orchard Park is a little further away from the airport than the Novotel mentioned above, but it can still be reached following a relatively short car or bus journey. Once you arrive you will be greeted by a front desk that works around the clock and is able to provide assistance where needed throughout the day.

There is both a bar and a restaurant available at the Hotel Orchard Park. The Onyx bar is quiet, spacious and stylish, not to mention well stocked, whilst in the Open House restaurant you can book yourself in for a freshly prepared lunch or dinner. The Hotel Orchard Park serves all guests a breakfast every morning, with a wide choice of food available.

City Suites Gateway

The City Suites Gateway hotel is a little closer to the airport than the hotel listed above, reachable following a ten minute drive. Check-in time here is not until 4:00pm, which is not one of this hotel’s finer points, but an earlier check-in might be possible if arranged in advance. The hotel has 174 rooms and a check-out time of 11:00am for all of them, so it is very possible that they can change the check-in time.

With high-speed internet available throughout the hotel, along with free parking, a business center, a conference room and much more, this hotel ticks many boxes for all kinds of travelers. The City Suites Gateway also has a beauty center and a fitness center, which means you can keep fit and pamper yourself. There is also a great restaurant located within the hotel, along with a well-stocked bar. As soon as you arrive you might never want to leave, but as the City Suites Gateway is close to many great attractions we suggest you take a step outside and see everything that the city of Taipei has to offer.

The Taipei 101 is the name currently given to a building that used to be known as the Taipei World Financial Center. This skyscraper is an iconic building that was at one time the tallest building in the world. In fact, it held this title from its opening in 2004, all the way until 2010, when the Burj Khalifa, the current tallest building in the world, was opened in the United Arab Emirates.

Not only is the Taipei 101 one of the tallest buildings in the world, but it is also one of the greenest (in the ecological sense of the world) which is unusual for such a huge skyscraper. A rating by the LEED actually declared the Taipei 101 to be the tallest green building in the world, a title that will take some beating. This stylish building plays an important role in Taiwan in many ways: it is an iconic building and something that the Taiwanese are very proud of, it is a tourist attraction and it is also a financial center.

If you are planning a trip to this city then you’ll want to make sure that you pay a visit to the Taipei 101. There are also plenty of other great attractions in this district, known as the Xinyi District, so many travelers choose to book into a hotel in the area. Below we have listed the best hotels in this district, making your decision decidedly easier.

W Taipei

The W Taipei is a beautifully designed 5-star hotel that offers exceptional service and beautiful rooms. Guests at the W Taipei can make use of their limousine service and valet parking, along with express check-in/check-out, iPod docks in all of the rooms, complementary bathrobes and slippers and much more. For the best VIP service available, book into one of the sizable W Taipei suites.

The W Taipei hotel includes an outdoor pool that is heated, which means it remains at the perfect temperature whatever the weather. There is also a trendy coffee bar in the hotel, and if you want to relax and unwind then you can lose yourself in the Jacuzzi. As for the dining options, the W Taipei plays host to the YEN restaurant, which serves freshly prepared Japanese and Chinese cuisine around the clock. If this is not your thing, then there are plenty of other restaurants serving an array of cuisines, all of which are located within a stone’s throw from the hotel’s entrance.

If you plan on heading out for a day of sightseeing, then be sure to ask the front desk to prepare you a packed lunch, a service that they offer to all of their guests. They can also provide directions and assistance where needed, so feel free to ask them any questions about the city that you might have.

AT Boutique Hotel

The AT Boutique Hotel is a 4-star hotel, with small but cozy rooms that are very reasonably priced. This is the perfect destination if you prefer to spend your holiday budget on fine restaurants and fun activities, but still want a hotel that does the basics right and allows you to stay comfortable at night and eat well in the morning. The AT Boutique Hotel has 88 rooms in total, and at the time of writing these rooms have recently been remodeled and redecorated, ensuring they look as fresh for their thousandth guest as they did for their first.

All of the rooms at the AT Boutique Hotel come with a flat-screen television that has satellite access, coffee and tea making facilities and a fridge. Guests can enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast every morning in the hotel dining room, and they can also request that the breakfast is delivered to their rooms. Check-in is available relatively earlier at the AT Boutique Hotel, beginning at just 2:00pm, as opposed to the city-wide standard of 3:00pm, but they also ask that guests check-out at 11:00am, which is an hour earlier than many other hotels in Taipei.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the AT Boutique Hotel and they also have a laundry service, a luggage service, dry cleaning service and more. As with all of the hotels listed here, another benefit of the AT Boutique Hotel is that if you ever feel claustrophobic or bored within the hotel, then you have a vibrant, buzzing and beautiful district to explore on your doorstep.

Home Hotel

The Home Hotel promises to deliver you a piece of home in the city of Taipei. This is a deluxe and luxury hotel that has been given a 4-star rating, but aspires to something better. As soon as you land in Taipei you can arrange to get to your room at the Home Hotel via their airport shuttle service, which regularly ferries guests to and from the International airport.

The Home Hotel has a fitness center so you can keep trim, working off all of the excess weight gained from enjoying the vast array of restaurants, bakeries and cafes, not to mention the many bars found in the local area. The Home Hotel does its best to ensure guests rarely have to leave the hotel, because as well as an onsite restaurant (where you will be served breakfast every morning) and a bar, there is also a nightclub located within the hotel. This is unusual, but it means you can enjoy yourself until the early hours and then simply head on upstairs to your room, which is located away from the nightclub so that the noise doesn’t affect your sleep.

All of the guests at the Home Hotel can make use of a limousine service, a wake-up service, a laundry service and more, whilst the rooms all come equipped with a mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, a flat-screen television and Wi-Fi access. If you want to see the Taipei 101, which really is an unmissable part of this beautiful city, then you can reach this iconic building with a ten minute walk. If that is too much for you, then you can also ask the front desk to book a taxi for you, but fresh air and a brisk walk never hurt anyone, and it will also allow you to drink in some more of the beautiful sights that this great city has to offer.
