The Japanese style of design is an elegant and beautiful one, not like anything else. The Japanese have their own way of doing things, their own way of creating, assigning and arranging. From the thinly padded and sliding doors that surround the rooms, to the beds that are only a few inches off the floor and to the general minimalist design, the Japanese also have their own way when it comes to designing hotel rooms. Luckily, if this is your sort of thing, you don’t have to go to Japan to experience it. Their near-neighbors Taiwan, and the city of Taipei in particular, have plenty of hotels that feature Japanese style designs throughout. In this article we have listed the best of them, to make your choice easier and to make your visit to this great city as perfect as you could want it to be.

Hotel Royal-Nikko Taipei

Decorated in a minimalist but modern Japanese style, a lot of thought and painstaking detail has gone into making the Hotel Royal-Nikko Taipei the best that it can be. One of the times in which hotels never seem to be quite in-sync with their guests is when it comes to check-in and check-out times. On holiday many people want to lie in. They have no work to go to, few responsibilities to attend to, so there is no need to wake up early. Despite that, many hotels have checkout times of 11:00am, which means that by the time they factor in eating breakfast, getting a shower, getting dressed and then leaving the room, guests have to wake up around 9:00am, maybe even earlier. Guests put up with this because they accept that they could probably use more time to sightsee anyway, and to plan their journey back home, but what about the check-in times?

Many hotels have check-in times of 3:00pm. This can be awkward for those traveling far to get to the hotel. If the flight or the train schedule, and therefore their arrival time, doesn’t sync with the check-in time they can be left holding their suitcases and watching the clock, which is very rarely practical.

That’s why we put this list together. Taipei is a very busy and exciting city, and standing around waiting for the hotel to let you into your room, missing out on great food and entertainment as you do, is no way to endear yourself to it. The hotels on this list, however, either have earlier check-in times, or can make arrangements so that you can check-in several hours earlier than normal.

Hotel Eclat Taipei

Located in the culturally rich Da’an District, which has many great restaurants and bars, along with plenty of attractions, the Hotel Eclat Taipei has 60 rooms. This little luxury hotel has a 5-star rating, with beautiful rooms and exceptional service that make it popular with leisure and business travelers alike. The checkout time for this hotel is pretty standard, at 12:00, but guests can check-in at the Hotel Eclat Taipei from just 14:00. This is a good hour less than the average, but you may struggle with regards to requesting an earlier time, due to the fact that they are a small and popular hotel, so the chances that your room was booked the night before your own booking are quite high. This means that they will need the time between 12:00 and 2:00 — from he previous guest checking out to you checking in — to clean and prepare the room.

The staff at the Hotel Eclat Taipei are very accommodating in many other ways though. If you are taking children with you, for instance, then they will happily supply you with an extra bed or cot in your room. There is an extra charge for a bed if the child is over 4, but there is no charge for a cot, although it does need to be arranged with the management of the hotel in advance.

The Hotel Eclat Taipei also offers free Wi-Fi and free parking for all of its guests. It has a laundry and a dry cleaning service, and guests can also enjoy Western cuisine in their onsite restaurant and a relaxing drink in their second floor bar.

Taipei Fullerton Hotel

The Taipei Fullerton Hotel is another hotel that offers check-in from 2:00pm. This 4-star rated hotel may even be able to accommodate you if you want to arrange for an earlier check-in time, due to the fact that they have 100 rooms — significantly more than the Hotel Eclat Taipei — which may give them more room to maneuver.

The Taipei Fullerton Hotel is also located in the popular Da’an District, and as well as plenty of attractions nearby, the hotel itself serves as a great destination. Designed in a modern style, the Taipei Fullerton Hotel offers-up Chinese and Western food, with buffets for breakfast and standard menus for other meals throughout the day. The hotel has free Wi-Fi throughout; all rooms feature iPod docs and all of them are air conditioned with a flat-screen television and cable TV channels.

If you want to relax and unwind, then you can head to the onsite Zen garden at anytime throughout the day. There is also a sauna. If you’re here on business then the Taipei Fullerton Hotel has a business center where you can arrange meetings and get some important work done, and if you travelled to the Taipei Fullerton Hotel by car then you will be happy to know that there is a car park outside the hotel, with free parking facilities for all guests.

K Hotel Taipei II

The K Hotel Taipei II is a 4-star hotel that has 81 rooms and is located in the Zhongshan District. As with the other hotels listed here, guests can check-in at the K Hotel Taipei II from 2:00pm, checking-out on their departure date at 12:00. An extra bed can also be brought into any of the K Hotel Taipei II rooms, with one child under the age of seven able to stay on one of these beds free of charge. Other children can also stay, but there may be additional costs.

Situated in the heart of Taipei, in a location that many hotels would kill to have, the K Hotel Taipei II is a stone’s throw from all of the best landmarks, restaurants, bars and attractions that this great city has to offer. These include the Xingtian Temple, which is just a few minutes away by car. If you’d prefer to venture further into the city then there is also a subway station located just a few minutes away from the K Hotel Taipei II, reachable by foot.

From their Superior Double Rooms, which are their cheapest rooms, to their K Suites, which are the biggest and most luxurious rooms, there is plenty here to match your budget and your needs. All guests are welcome to a buffet breakfast, which is served every morning, and all rooms come fitted with fridges, air-conditioning, flat-screen televisions, DVDs and more. All guests will also receive free slippers and the use of fax and photocopying services (available at the front desk), a hairdryer, free toiletries and much more.

Taipei operates a little differently from cities you might be used to. This is a cultural melting pot, a city that runs at a frantic pace, and one that caters for many tastes, many nationalities and many ethnicities. One of the ways in which Taipei differs from the big cities you might be used to, is in the accommodation that it offers. As well as the standard 3, 4 and 5 star rooms and suites, offering a home from home, there are also themed hotels which promise to escort you and your partner to a fantasy land.

These hotels are typically called “love hotels”, aimed at couples, young and old, seeking to inject some sparkle into their love life, giving them a safe and relaxing place where they can fulfill their fantasies. These hotels are not seedy, nor do they operate underground or on the fringes of the law. They are very popular here in Taiwan and across Japan and other Eastern countries. They are clean, professional and often 5-star establishments, and if you’re passing through this great city, then you should definitely check them out.

Some of the best themed hotels in Taipei have been listed below, but bear in mind that this is only a small selection and there are many more out there.

Eden Hotel

This is one of the most unique love hotels in Taiwan, focusing on couples young and old that want to connect in a special way. Many of these hotels are geared towards common fetishes, and although Eden Hotel does cater for such desires, it also delivers an extra dimension, which rooms such as the Batman themed room. As you would expect, this room is fitted-out like a Bat Cave. There is nothing sexual about this room and if not for the hotel in which it was located, it could make for a great room to take your superhero obsessed son or daughter.

This room actually helped Eden Hotel to go global recently, as many websites ran an article on this particular room that quickly went viral. It was even covered by many big newspapers and magazines, including the British tabloid The Daily Mail, who published a piece on Eden Hotel and their Batman room on their Mail Online website. The room can be rented for just a few hours at a time, which should give you a hint as to the purpose of this room and this hotel on the whole. Rest assured that this is a very clean hotel though and one that is cleaned and fitted with new sheets and refreshed amenities for all new guests, regardless of how many of them hire this room on a daily basis.

These rooms can also be rented out for a night or for longer, with reasonable prices. You do pay a premium when compared to some other hotels, but considering the level of detail and luxury that goes into each of the Eden Hotel rooms, it is definitely worth it. If Batman is not your thing, then one of the other 45 rooms in this hotel is sure to please. These include the Prison room, where you can live-out your fantasies of getting frisky behind bars, and the Egyptian room, which will escort you back to the time of Cleopatra.

If you have your eye on a particular room, then you should call ahead and try to book in advance. With all of the attention that some of these rooms have stirred up (and we’re thinking about the Batman themed room again) there is a good chance that you will struggle to get the room you want at short notice. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, then head to booking.com, where you can find more details on all of the rooms that Eden Hotel have available.

ISIS Taipei

Located in the Jhongshan District, this is a boutique hotel with a wide choice of themed rooms available. Although it looks fairly bland and generic on the outside, the ISIS is anything but, and once you step inside it’s like crossing into a different world. There are many themed rooms available, along with some expansive suites that offer the finest in Taiwanese luxury and hospitality. All of the rooms in this hotel come with private en-suite bathrooms, and some of them have really pushed the boat out, with spa baths, Jacuzzis, steam rooms and everything else you need to make the night extra special for you and your partner.

This hotel is popular with families as well as couples, and the rooms are more than big enough to cater for several children, with extra beds available in many of them. The hotel is also in a prime location, within walking distance of many top locations in the city, reminding you that as fun as the room itself is, there is so much more to explore and experience.

As far as some of the themes go, you will not find a Batman room at the ISIS Taipei, at least not yet anyway. That might change in the future if it turns out that Eden Hotel have kickstarted a trend that their competitors are eager to follow, but in the meantime you can still enjoy everything from Egyptian themed rooms to Spanish themed rooms and much more. Which room you choose depends on a number of things, from your budget to your tastes, your needs and the amount of people staying in the room with you.

City Inn Hotel

As one of the highest rated theme hotels in the country, and one of the highest rated hotels in general, the accommodation and the service at the City Inn Hotel is nothing short of exceptional. You don’t just have to take our word for it either, as one look on booking.com will show you just how well regarded this hotel is, with thousands of travelers from all over the world passing through its doors every year and enjoying every minute of their experience.

It may look unassuming from the outside, but there is a Tardis awaiting inside, with plenty of luxury rooms designed in a variety of styles to suit many different tastes. The rooms are very big, and there are also suites for those who seek something even bigger. The location is also top notch, as the City Inn is within walking distance of close to a dozen stores, including convenience stores and supermarkets, and there is also a main train line just a stone’s throw away. The City Inn may not be as cosy as the other hotels on this list, but if you want something minimalistic, clean and with exceptional service, then you can’t go wrong here. The City Inn is the perfect base for anyone seeking to experience everything that Taiwan, and the city of Taipei, has to offer.

Sometimes the best hotels are not just those that look great, offer the best amenities in your room and also have a spa, a pool and a fitness center. These are great things, and the best hotels tend to have them, but service is also up there and exceptional service is a must for all of the best hotels. In Taipei, and in other big cities for that matter, you will find that many of the top hotels go out of their way to help their guests. They can help them to find the best restaurants, the best attractions and some of them even have special deals on those places. This is the definition of going the extra mile, ensuring their guests have a great time both in and out of their hotel, and we have listed the ones that have the best deals below.

Deals for Leisure Travelers

The Landis Hotel is one of the most popular hotel resorts in the city of Taipei. This 5-star resort has plenty to offer its guests when it comes to broadening their travel options. Not only do they have a concierge service and a tour desk that can help guests to find the best attractions and to get a number of special offers at the nearby restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, but with the Landis One Club they can also receive many other benefits. It is free to join and guests can enjoy the benefits at Landis hotels and resorts around the world.

Caesar Park, locoed in the busing Zhongzheng District, is also ideal for travelers. They have a tour desk on hand that can arrange day trips for all of their guests. This is great news for travelers who don’t want to spend time trawling websites and brochures, as they can just head to the tour desk in the morning, have a chat with a knowledgable local and then choose a day trip that suits them best. There is plenty to see and do in the local area, and if guests want to travel further afield then the hotel can also help with travel arrangements, including bus routes, subway directions, taxis and more.

The Regent Taipei also has a tour desk and can guide guests to the best locations around the Zhongshan District, which is where the Regent is located. This is a great district for food, with a number of gourmet restaurants around, including street food vendors who offer cheap and delicious local food. If guests want to venture further afield then they can also get advice on the best attractions elsewhere in the city. The hotel is just a short walk from the Zhong Shan Train Station, so getting around the city and seeing the best that it has to offer shouldn’t be an issue at all.

Other hotels that offer the same service include the City Suites, a 4-star hotel that is located in the Datong District and is a short distance away from the Ningxia Night Market, and the Howard Plaza Hotel.

The hotels listed here also have plenty going on within the buildings. These are luxury hotels, with the best accommodation in the city, and with several restaurants, bars and more within the buildings themselves. Taipei is a big and modern city, with plenty to see and explore, but these hotels go out of their way to ensure that guests never want to leave and never need to leave. All of these hotels, and every other respectable hotel in the area, should also be able to help in other ways. Many of them have a concierge service and several of them also have a baby-sitting service, although you typically need to find a family friendly hotel for this. Many of them also have a 24-hour front desk, with friendly staff that are able to provide recommendations on the best places to eat, drink and have a good time. They should also be able to provide guests with directions, and to book a taxi for them.

If you ensure that you book into a highly-rated hotel, preferably one that is 3 star and above, then you should be okay here, but if you want the best of the best when it comes to travel deals and travel packages, then you should opt for the hotels listed above, and the ones listed below.

Deals for Business Travelers

There are a lot of business hotels in Taipei, with hordes of business travelers arriving in this city everyday, keen to arrange meetings, conferences and more. There are hotels that offer a great number of business packages for those seeking the best deals, including the 5-star Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel.

This luxury hotel might be out of reach for many travelers, but those seeking to arrange business meetings and events can take advantage of some offers on what are known as Super Value Dates. These are essentially off-peak times, when the Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel isn’t typically packed with those seeking to arrange events, and therefore the many business rooms are empty. If dates are not important then this could be perfect for you and your company. The Super Value Dates change all of the time but at the time of writing, in early March 2015, the next Super Value Date is at the beginning of June.

During these dates you and your colleagues can get into the hotel cheap, catering for more than ten people at a time. If you are looking to take advantage of this offer then you can book through the Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel website itself. The hotel also offers a number of other special deals for business travelers.

There are plenty of other business hotels that can help you and your company to put on a great event. These range from the simplistic and the cheap, including the Hansome Business Hotel, which is just 17 miles from the Taoyuan International Airport, and the Humble House Hotel, which also offers many amenities and facilities that the leisure traveller can also enjoy.

Feng shui is a system of establishing harmony with your surroundings. This can be done in many ways and typically involves placing furniture in certain positions. People can create feng shui in their own homes, but many choose to hire feng shui specialists who will arrange their homes for them. It is also popular with offices and other businesses, and for some it is vital that the hotel they visit on their holidays has been organized according to feng shui. If you are one of these, or if you simply would prefer a hotel that has been organized to create peace, harmony and balance, then this list should help. All of these hotels have been organized according to feng shui, and all of them also score highly in other areas as well, as we shall soon discover.

The Grand Hotel

This magnificent hotel holds a place close to the hearts of all residents in Taipei. Designed in a classical Chinese style, the majority of it was built in the 1950s, with the final pieces put together a couple of decades later. This is where many diplomats and delegates go, which means it is often one of their first introductions to Taipei. The hotel therefore ensures that its surroundings are immaculate, well laid-out and completely feng shui. As its staff can also be the first Taipei residents that many foreign delegates see and talk to, they are all trained to a high standard and are required to be polite and professional at all times. For a long time this was the tallest building in the country, and although that title has since gone to Taipei 101, it remains as one of the tallest Chinese classical building in the world.

Many of the rooms at The Grand Hotel adopt feng shui and al of them are spacious. In fact, in a city that is typically on the compact side when it comes to accommodation, The Grand Hotel don’t skimp on room size. All rooms have a sofa and a flat-screen television, and many of them also have balconies with some of the most beautiful views in the city. What you get depends entirely on which room you choose, and there are plenty of options in that department. They range from Standard Double and Twin Rooms, all the way up to their Prestige Standard and Double, perfect for single travelers and couples alike, to their Junior Suites, which are the epitome of luxury. It doesn’t end there either, as The Grand Hotel is more than just a hotel and has plenty to offer its guests in the way of entertainment and recreation, not to mention great food and drink. There is an outdoor pool on the hotel grounds that is heated, which means it is accessible all of the year. There is also a tennis court and a playground, and if you want to keep the kids busy when you’re at the sauna or getting a massage in the spa, then there is also a Kids’ Club. As it is popular with diplomats, there is no shortage of business facilities at The Grand Hotel, including meeting rooms, conference rooms and banqueting rooms.

The Grand Hotel is also ideally located, sitting in the heart of the Zhongshan District, which is one of the most, if not the most popular district for travelers in the city of Taipei. There are plenty of restaurants and street food vendors nearby, and the Shilin Night Market and National Palace Museum are also just a stone’s throw away. If you want to head further afield then the train station is also within walking distance.

City Suites

The City Suites hotel is a beautifully designed 4-star hotel that offers all of the basic amenities and much more besides. There are 111 rooms in total in this hotel, and all of them are fitted with a television, a bath and a comfortable seating area. There are many rooms to choose from, depending on your needs and your budget. These include Premium Suites and City Deluxe Rooms, which offer the best service to those prepared to pay for it, along with Standard Double Rooms, Standard Twin Rooms and more. This is a popular hotel in the the popular Songshan District (ideal for those seeking the best local cuisine and the best ways to absorb local culture) so we recommend that you book-in early to ensure you can get the room you want on the date that you want.

The design of the City Suites hotel is elegant but simplistic, whilst also adhering to the principles of feng shui. Outside of your room, in the main areas of the hotel, you will find a 24-hour front desk that offers a number of services and is on hand to help where needed, a tour desk that can guide you to the best attractions and can even suggest day trips, a shared lounge and meeting rooms. There is also an airport shuttle, which can pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel on your day of arrival, before taking you back on your day of departure; a car rental service; a currency exchange; and more.

RF Hotel

If you want something a little cheaper then head for the RF Hotel, which is a 3-star rated establishment in the heart of the Da’an District, which is ideal for food lovers, shoppers and for those seeking some culture. All of the rooms are spacious and simple, following the standards of feng shui, and although they are not as big as the ones in The Grand Hotel, they are a great deal cheaper and they do have everything you need to make your trip to Taipei a comfortable and memorable one. This includes elegant furnishings, a flat-screen television and a comfortable seating area. There isn’t great deal in the hotel itself, certainly not as much as the ones listed above, but there are a wealth of restaurants, bars and more outside of it.
